It tells the story of people living in what they think is a "utopia" as seen through the eyes of a young boy named Jonas. On everyone's 12 birthday they get assigned a job. He is assigned the duty of the Receiver. He retrieves memories from this man called the Giver. He begins to experience new things via memories and dreams. He sees differences between people, he feels hot and cold, and he has emotion. Until then Jonas had lived in a world of conformity. Everyone looked the same, there was complete climate control, and there was no feeling. Anyone who was different was "released" (killed) so people from this community never new of other races, religions, or beliefs. Jonas cannot live in his plain world after learning about color and temperature and the unusual feeling in him. He escapes into the world as In the utopia people could not see color. Color is the result of light rays bouncing off objects and entering your eye at an angle. Light travels through space at about 186,000 miles per second. Ergo the waves couldn't be stopped. Not to mention the waves reflect off of objects, so the waves would hit an object and keep bouncing to make color for everything. This means it would be impossible to block out color. The town is run by the elders. One of there jobs was to keep the climate the same. There is no precipitation, and temperature is kept comfortable. That means it doesn't rain or snow and that water can't evaporate. Life as it exists today cannot survive without the water cycle. It starts with evaporation. The temperature must be hot enough to turn water particles into vapor where it comes together in the sky. It condenses and when the cloud gets full it rains. Depending on the outside temperature the water would fall to earth as rain, sleet, hail, or snow. People need water to live and ...

It bothers me when I hear about people committing suicide or killing an innocent person because all of the knowledge they gained in life goes with them to the grave and is then lost forever. This is why I have decided that the time has come for me to write a book that will help people come to terms with their personalities and perhaps learn to appreciate their reason for being in this world in the process. If I can touch a life and prevent even one homicide of suicide case in the world, then my book Preserve Knowledge: The Healing of the Nation will have accomplished its objective to save lives and preserve knowledge. Nobody really understands why people commit crimes against lives and how it affects the perpetrator spiritually. I would like to help in understanding their situation by helping them in their healing process and introducing them to other spiritual leaders who were once lost and without direction in their lives and have now become leaders of society. Only by understanding these people and their situations will it be possible for us to communicate with our inner self and soul and eventually understand how wisdom of the mind and soul becomes a reality. Through my book, I wish to help people come to the realization that when a person dies or is killed, everything he has learned in life becomes useless. There was no transference of knowledge to the living that are capable of propagating the knowledge shared with them by the deceased. By helping people to survive, we preserve knowledge and in the end the shared knowledge helps in empowering a nation. An intellectual nation is a rich nation. My book will concentrate on developing the 2 most important areas of development in a human being. These are the mind and soul. It is imperative that the mind of a person be developed because the mind can be likened to an absorbent sponge that will absorb all information that comes its way. It is like a blank slate waiting to be written upon using permanent ink. Although the mind filters information, it also helps the soul develop through logical connections and thinking. The soul on the other hand helps that knowledge we collect to become part of a persons personality and memory database. During the times when the soul feels so tired that if seems to make more sense to end your life, a person feels hopeless. But this is not the way God intended for us to live our lives. God created man to be the highest and most intelligent form of animals because only man was tasked with the duty of taking care of our planet and recording its history. This is the main reason why all knowledge and information that each man has in his mind and soul must be shared with others. Sharing information with the right people always helps to enrich lives. When a person feels good about himself and he has the right kind of support to help him overcome his shortcomings, the nation benefits. That person will always turn out to be a valuable asset to society and whose contribution would be solely missed if he were to take his knowledge to the grave with him. This is why it is imperative that my book Preserve Knowledge: The Healing of the Nation must be published. So many lives are lost these days to suicide or homicide. Santiago as Code Hero in Hemingways The Old Man and The Sea Essay

Santiago as Code Hero in Hemingway's The Old Man and The Sea "The Old Man and the Sea" is a heroic tale of man's strength pitted against forces he cannot control. It is a story about an old Cuban fisherman and his three-day battle with a giant Marlin. Through the use of three prominent themes; friendship, bravery, and Christianity; the "Old Man and the Sea" strives to teach important life lessons to the reader while also epitomizing Santiago, the old fisherman, as a Hemingway code hero. The relationship between Santiago and the boy is introduced early in the story. They are unlikely companions; one is old and the other young, yet they share an insuperable amount of respect and loyalty for each other. Santiago does not treat Manolin as a young boy but rather as an equal. Age is not a factor in their relationship. Manolin does not even act as a young boy; he is mature and sensitive to Santiago's feelings. He even offers to disobey his parents and accompany Santiago on his fishing trips. Santiago is viewed as an outcast in his village because he has not caught any fish for more than eighty-four days and is therefore "unlucky". Nonetheless Manolin is loyal to Santiago and even when his parents forbid him he wants to help his friend. Their conversations are comfortable, like that of two friends who have known each other for a long time. When they speak it is usually about baseball or fishing, the two things they have most in common. Their favorite team is the Yankees and Santiago never loses faith in them even when the star player, Joe DiMaggio is injured with a heel spur. In this way Santiago not only teaches Manolin about fishing but also about important characteristics such as faith. In the story Santiago's bravery is uns... ...e does allow Christianity to be a more dominant theme than the other but instead makes it more symbolic than intentional. He does not smother the relationship between the old man and the young boy but instead separates them for a large part of the story. Finally, he does not make Santiago's bravery a central them by highlighting his weaknesses. In the end the old mans perseverance and faith pay off. He finally gains the respect of the village and succeeds in teaching Manolin the lessons of faith and bravery. In Ernest Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea", one will find many examples in which the main character, Santiago, surpasses many hardships while being courageous, brave, and being a friend. Conduct Ethics Training is important for companies because it not only involves doing what is right and proper, but it is also good for business. Ethical conduct is the basis for long-term success in any organization. Here are some of the many advantages to ethical conduct at work: * Ethical conduct promotes a strong public image for the organization. People respect an organization that makes ethical choices. Customers like doing business with an organization they can trust. * Ethical conduct makes the best use of resources. Money, time, and effort are put into productive activities rather than diverted for questionable purposes or personal gain. * Ethical conduct on the part of all employees also helps maintain quality and productivity. When employees follow ethical standards, they do not cut corners or short-change the company or its customers. * Ethical conduct assists the organization to comply with laws and regulations. What is ethical is also legal. * Ethical conduct ensures good and proper relationships with customers and vendors. * Ethical conduct boosts morale and promotes teamwork. When employees can trust one another and management, they can work together more harmoniously and effectively. Week two: What are the most critical steps to successful implement high-performance work systems? First, work flows are organized around key business processes, and people are often grouped into teams to carry out those processes. In marketing, segmentation is crucial in creating a successful marketing strategy, because marketers are then able to identify consumers who have common needs and applications for the relevant goods and services. For example demographics such as age, gender and ethnicity are one of the many criteria when segmenting a market. For our marketing plan, we have focus upon building a tortilla company. Tortilla, which is a key component in many Mexican dishes, is favored not only by Latin American, but has also become a very popular ingredient in many western and Asian foods. The concept of tortilla is that it acts like a bread; people can apply almost any kinds of vegetables and meats, fold it or wrap it (depending on the style or preference) and bite it, its as simple as eating a hamburger. The tortillas that many of us eat today however have lost its traditional value. Nowadays Tortillas are designed and manufactured for mass consumption, and as a result fresh organic ingredients are left behind. As a tortilla expert we want to put an end to the blunt asset of 21 SST century tortilla and so our company has gone back to the basics; cooking tortillas the style a Mexican street vendor would do (read product part for more detail concerning tortilla-making). This idea of authentic Mexican tortilla is what our company will be trying to capitalize on; we depend on the idea that people are still concern about quality, not quantity. In marketing terms we are focusing on consumer preference, which is essential for us to identify what market segment we are going to target. We start with measuring possibility. First Step: Measuring Possibility All marketers know that the size of the market must be big enough to be worth targeting. According to statistic Canada as of 2001 244,400 people of Latin American origin lived in Canada. That year, they represented almost 1% of the total population of Canada (Statistic Canada). In Vancouver alone, there are approximately 28,575 Hispanics, which is a surprisingly big number considering, the distance it takes to travel between the two continents. Conclusion: the sample size proves to be substantial for our Tortilla Company to continue. Second Step: Segment growth It is very important for every business to analyze the prospect for growth. First we look at the number of tortilla producer in BC and identify who they are. The leading pioneer producer so far is a company called El Comma based in Burnable. Their tortillas are distributed in most of the major authentic Mexican restaurants such as La Tequila, Don Guacamole (closed for business), Salsa Agave etc. Another competitor is a smaller company called Donna Elastic based in Surrey. Their products are supplied mostly in specialty food stores across British Columbia, although its main business is focused upon delivery orders. Assuming that there are only two major competitors in BC, we can still capture a market-share of approximately 25%, which is around 7500 of Mexican people. According to statistic Canada, 7500 of these people earn an average income of $28000 (lower than the Canadian average income of $30000) however still a relatively sufficient income. Our findings illustrate that these Mexican people demand homemade corn tortillas compare to tortillas produce by big international brands. However the resources are not easily available with only two major companies providing the service. In conclusion: the Vancouver Hispanic market segment still has a very big room to grow. Third Step: Formulate narrower markets (Latino Community and Mexicans) McCarthy and Perpetual suggest forming sub-markets around what you would call your typical customer, then aggregate similar people into this segment, on the condition to be able to satisfy their needs using the same Marketing mix. As previously discussed before, the central market we are targeting is the Latino community living in Vancouver, BC. Our main concern however is the Mexican community. The problem however is that quality homemade tortilla are only available in these boutique supermarkets. This is where our tortilla company steps in; with our homemade authentic concept, we expect that there will be more incentive and attraction for more Mexicans to buy their Tortillas and along with their daily groceries. A win-win situation is at hand. Considering Other Markets (other possible area of growth) Previously we have also considered the possibility of aiming the Asian market, which is not surprisingly one of biggest market in Vancouver. We were looking at a specific sub-market with huge potential growth and we were lead to the Indian community. In BC alone, there are over 230,000 Indians, half of them residing in Surrey. Moreover with the Indian economy booming and IT outsourcing becoming the major part of the business, the continuity increase in the Indian population will surely double for the next coming years. This is backed by an analysis, which says India-based firms are starting to win larger-scale Canadian TIT contracts and growing six times faster than traditional Tier 1 providers in TO. Mainstream Market The mainstream market is a very broad market. It is the most dominant market and therefore has the biggest potential for growth. The people inside this market are usually not tied to buying one specific product; rather, they buy product that are in trend and replace it once it has gone out of trend. This is very apparent in markets such as technology and fashion where products come and go very quickly. The mainstream market for Tortilla can be found in big retails. As mentioned before, tortillas brands supplied in these big retails are well known international brands such as Dittos. The market sadly are used to consuming these low quality processed products and as a result many of them are not aware of what home made Mexican tortillas taste like. This situation however is an advantage for our company because of one important fact: our tortilla is a newly introduced product line. A new product line meaner that there is big room for growth and for our company to fully establish our tortilla in an existing market it will most likely require some time. For example, we need to consider factors such as Canadian housewife. These housewife play a vital role to our success in the mainstream market because they the ones who decide what goes inside the grocery; instead of the usual bread and butter for breakfast we can convince them to substitute to our low calorie home made tortilla. Once these housewife have gained more knowledge about our reduce and realized the benefit of it, we hypothetically have secured a very major part of the Canadian market Niche Market Another important contributing factor to the popular rise of Tortilla, is professional working segment. With their limited time constraints, this specific group of people prefers foods that are on the go and Tortilla is the perfect complement to this kind of lifestyle. An analysis also shows that Tortilla can fill up to 52% of your daily fiber needs and contains low calorie: perfect from a marketing standpoint because these office working people are assume to have high disposable income and therefore emend more quality alternatives such as the home made Tortillas our company produces. Another important trend we have realized is how much Vancouver people value healthy and active lifestyle. Geography of the United States of America The United States of America is the third largest country in the world based on population and land area. The United States also has the worlds largest economy and is one of the most influential nations in the world. Each of these had local governments and their populations grew quickly throughout the mid-1700s. However, during this time tensions between the American colonies and the British government began to arise as the American colonists were subject to British taxation but had no representation in the British Parliament. These tensions eventually led to the American Revolution which was fought from 1775-1781. On July 4, 1776, the colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence and following the American victory over the British in the war, the U.S. was recognized as independent of England. In 1788, the U.S. Constitution was adopted and in 1789, the first president, George Washington, took office. Following its independence, the U.S. grew rapidly and the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 nearly doubled the nations size. The early to mid-1800s also saw growth on the west coast as the California Gold Rush of 1848-1849 spurred western migration and the Oregon Treaty of 1846 gave the U.S. control of the Pacific Northwest. Despite its growth, the U.S. also had severe racial tensions in the mid-1800s as African slaves were used as laborers in some states. Tensions between the slave states and non-slave states led to the Civil War and eleven states declared their secession from the union and formed the Confederate States of America in 1860. The Civil War lasted from 1861-1865 when the Confederate States were defeated. Following the Civil War, racial tensions remained through the 20th century. Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the U.S. continued to grow and remained neutral at the beginning of World War I in 1914. It later joined the Allies in 1917. The 1920s were a time of economic growth in the U.S. and the country began to grow into a world power. In 1929, however, the Great Depression began and the economy suffered until World War II. The U.S. also remained neutral during this war until Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941, at which time the U.S. joined the Allies. Following WWII, the U.S. economy again began to improve. The Cold War followed shortly thereafter as did the Korean War from 1950-1953 and the Vietnam War from 1964-1975. Following these wars, the U.S. economy, for the most part, grew industrially and the nation became a world superpower concerned with its domestic affairs because public support waivered during previous wars. On September 11, 2001, the U.S. was subject to terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C., which led to the government pursuing a policy of reworking world governments, particularly those in the Middle East. Government of the United States The U.S. government is a representative democracy with two legislative bodies. These bodies are the Senate and House of Representatives. The Senate consists of 100 seats with two representatives from each of the 50 states. The House of Representatives consists of 435 seats and are elected by the people from the 50 states. The executive branch consists of the President who is also the head of government and chief of state. The U.S. also has a judicial branch of government that is made up of the Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals, U.S. District Courts and State and County Courts. The U.S. is comprised of 50 states and one district (Washington D.C.). Economics and Land Use in the United States The U.S. has the largest and most technologically advanced economy in the world. It mainly consists of the industrial and service sectors. The main industries include petroleum, steel, motor vehicles, aerospace, telecommunications, chemicals, electronics, food processing, consumer goods, lumber, and mining. Agricultural production, though only a small part of the economy, includes wheat, corn, other grains, fruits, vegetables, cotton, beef, pork, poultry, dairy products, fish and forest products. Geography and Climate of the United States The U.S. borders both the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans and is bordered by Canada and Mexico. It is the third largest country in the world by area and has a varied topography. The eastern regions consist of hills and low mountains while the central interior is a vast plain (called the Great Plains region) and the west has high rugged mountain ranges (some of which are volcanic in the Pacific Northwest). Alaska also features rugged mountains as well as river valleys. Hawaiis landscape varies but is dominated by volcanic topography. Like its topography, the climate of the U.S. also varies depending on location.
